Super duplex stainless steel is a type of stainless steel belonging to a special family of steels called the duplex steel. Duplex is a material that is made out of a chromium, molybdenum and nickel alloy. This alloy has a dual nature that contains properties of the ferritic steel and the austenitic steel. This dual nature causes the steel to be stronger and at the same time be corrosion resistant. There are three major groups of duplex; namely, the standard duplex, the super duplex and the lean duplex. The Super duplex has the highest pitting corrosion resistance. The Super duplex stainless steel grades differ ranging from EN1.4410 to some hyper duplex grades that have PREN numbers above 45. The PREN number indicates the composition percentages and the pitting corrosion resistance. The Super duplex steel price varies from supplier to supplier. The addition of nitrogen in the super duplex grades makes the corrosion resistance even higher. To form the necessary intermetallic phases, sometimes tungsten is also used. The higher quantities of these elements make the material harder for processing because of the reduced impact resistance.
