The strength from the ferritic phase and the corrosion resistance properties from the austenitic phases are optimized in duplex steel. The different grades come by due to the addition of alloying materials present in different mixtures. The duplex steel grades are numbered for easy identification. The numbers also indicate the mixture by percentages of the major elements. There are three different groups of duplex stainless steel. The duplex, super duplex and lean duplex are the major groups within which there are different grades. Duplex contains chromium, molybdenum and nickel it its composition. It could either be hot rolled or cold drawn depending on the grades and products. The grading of Duplex stainless steel also indicates the pitting corrosion resistance which is indicated by the PREN number. The PREN number is basically an identification of the percentages of chromium, molybdenum and nickel in the composition. The lean duplex has the lowest PREN and has less pitting corrosion resistance but is very strong and used in the construction industry. The super duplex on the other hand has the highest PREN numbers which has very high pitting corrosion resistance and is used in the chemical industries. The standard duplex has a medium range of PREN numbers with medium pitting corrosion resistance. It is also the most widely used duplex due to the cost and balancing nature.
